Europas Stunde im Irak ist gekommen

Mit der Übergabe der Souveränität an eine irakische Regierung, eröffnet das formelle Ende der amerikanischen Besatzung des Irak Europa die Chance, eine wichtige Rolle bei der Entscheidung über die Zukunft dieser wichtigen Nation zu übernehmen. Die Europäische Union muss aus dem Abseits heraustreten und handeln, zum einen, um dafür zu sorgen, dass die Übergangsregierung Wahlen durchführt und einen lebensfähigen irakischen Staat erschafft, und zum anderen, um Europas eigene Interessen und Werte in der Region zu wahren.

Das völlige Scheitern der Irakpolitik der Regierung Bush hat Europa die Tür geöffnet, eine ernstzunehmende alternative Vision für die Zukunft des Irak anzubieten. Was aber sollen die europäischen Kriegsgegner vorschlagen, deren schlimmste Befürchtungen sich bestätigt haben?

Natürlich ist es für Europa verlockend nichts vorzuschlagen und nichts zu unternehmen und einfach abzuwarten bis die Irakkrise John Kerry ins Weiße Haus befördert und George Bush zurück nach Texas. Doch die unglücklichen Umstände Amerikas - und des Irak - sind den europäischen Interessen abträglich. Eine Politik des "je schlimmer, desto besser" ist schlicht inakzeptabel: Sie reflektiert den von der US-Regierung angenommenen Zynismus, für den sie zu Recht kritisiert wird.
