发自普林斯顿——40年前我和另外几个学生在英国牛津市一条繁忙的街道上散发传单,抗议用密集式笼箱养鸡的行为。大多数接过传单的人都不知道自己吃的鸡蛋原来来自于那些极为窄小,以致连一只鸟都无法完全伸展双翼的笼子——而常规操作中这么一个笼子要装下四只母鸡。而那些母鸡根本不能随意走动或是在窝里生蛋。

许多人都为我们这帮年轻人的理想主义叫好,却也告诉我们说想要这样的大型行业发生变革是不可能的。但他们错了。

从2012年1月1日起,在这种笼子里饲养母鸡就是违法行为,不仅在英国,还包括全部27个欧盟国家。你依然可以把母鸡养在笼子里,但必须提供更多的空间,而且笼子内必须配备鸡窝盒以及磨爪柱。上个月,英国母鸡福利信托基金的成员向一只名为“解放”的母鸡提供了一个新家。而据他们所说,这只母鸡是英国最后一批还住在密集笼箱里的母鸡之一。
