La maison raciale divisée de l'Europe

L'extrême droite européenne est caractérisée par son racisme et son utilisation de la question de l'immigration en tant que divergence politique. La Lega Nord en Italie, les Vlaams Blok aux Pays-Bas, les partisans du Front national de Le Pen en France, constituent tous des exemples de partis ou de mouvements formés sur le thème courant de l'aversion envers les immigrants et la promotion de politiques simplistes pour les contrôler. Alors que des individus comme Jorg Haidar et Jean-Marie Le Pen peuvent aller et (jamais assez tôt) venir, la question raciale ne disparaîtra jamais de la politique européenne dans un futur proche.

Une population vieillissante et des frontières de plus en plus ouvertes impliquent une fragmentation raciale croissante dans les pays européens. Les partis dominants du centre gauche et du centre droit ont affronté cette perspective en appliquant la politique de l'autruche, espérant contre toute attente que le problème disparaîtrait. Ce ne sera pas le cas, comme le démontre clairement l'histoire raciale de l'Amérique. Les relations raciales aux Etats-Unis ont monopolisé depuis des décennies - et monopolisent toujours - le devant de la scène politique, au point que les clivages raciaux occupent une place aussi importante que les revenus, sinon plus, en tant que facteurs déterminants des préférences et des attitudes politiques.

La première étape pour aborder la question de la politique raciale consiste à comprendre l'origine et les conséquences de l'animosité raciale, même si cela implique la découverte de vérités déplaisantes à entendre. Tel est précisément le but poursuivi en grande partie par des équipes de recherche en sciences économiques, en sociologie, en psychologie et en sciences politiques aux Etats-Unis. Cette recherche démontre que les représentants de différentes races se font beaucoup moins confiance les uns avec les autres ; les Blancs sont moins enclins à soutenir les dépenses d'aide sociale qui, selon eux, favorisent les minorités ; des communautés plus fragmentées racialement disposent de gouvernements moins efficaces, d'une corruption et d'un trafic d'influence plus importants, de taux de crime plus élevés et de moins de biens publics productifs par dollar imposé.
