La policía de la conciencia de Europa

Es notable la historia del rechazo, el pasado otoño, a mi nombramiento como miembro de la Comisión Europea. Habiendo sido nominado a la Comisión por el gobierno italiano, fui obligado a retirar mi candidatura debido a ciertos comentarios supuestamente homofóbicos que, según se dijo, había hecho ante el Comité de Libertades Civiles, Justicia y Asuntos de Interior del Parlamento Europeo. Ahora que los ánimos se han calmado un poco, y con una nueva Comisión en funciones, es el momento de preguntarnos qué lecciones se pueden aprender de todo este asunto.

La primera tiene relación con lo indispensables que son, en el ámbito de la política, la veracidad y la exactitud de la información y su difusión en los medios. La democracia funciona sólo si los temas que se debaten se informan de manera imparcial. Por supuesto, cada uno tiene la libertad de comentar y evaluar los acontecimientos según le plazca, pero en los medios de comunicación es necesario que haya un alto estándar de fidelidad a la verdad; de lo contrario, los debates quedan tan desvirtuados que los ciudadanos ya no pueden evaluar su significado correctamente. Los periodistas no tienen derecho a distorsionar los hechos hasta el punto de reinventarlos.

En mi caso, la principal acusación en mi contra era un invento: no hice ninguna afirmación homofóbica. Tampoco introduje el tema de la homosexualidad en el debate en torno a mi nombramiento. Mis oponentes lo hicieron. En el debate no usé la palabra “pecado”, con su alta carga emocional, vinculándola a la homosexualidad. Una vez más, mis enemigos lo hicieron.
