教育在结束欧洲分裂的过程中扮演着重要的角色。四十年前,查尔斯•戴•高乐和康拉德•阿登纳批准为两国的儿童分别编写新的课本。使用新课本有助于结束法德之间一个世纪以来的对抗状态。

当今的挑战需要我们积极地采用这样的教育政策。随着10个来自中、东、和南欧的国家在五月加入欧盟,欧盟在政治、经济和社会方面将会变得前所未有地多元化。这无疑会带来新的机遇,但同时也会催生新的风险。因为一个扩大的欧盟在两个月内就会变成现实,所以我们必须树立文化谅解的观念从而帮助新成员国顺利地融入欧盟大家庭。

一些欧盟长期奉行的价值观在传达给新成员国时应该相对容易。在十年前的《马斯特里赫特条约》中,欧盟的成员国们一致同意尊重所有成员民族的历史、文化和传统。在最近的第一轮谈判中未被接受的欧盟宪法草案不仅承诺尊重文化传统,还责成欧盟采取积极的措施保护、维持和发展欧洲的文化和语言多样性。
