大选让许多美国人觉得,美国有能力进步,也在进步——朝着理想状态进步。奥巴马受到了众多少数族裔的支持:非洲裔美国人、拉丁裔、亚裔美国人、穆斯林美国人、同性恋美国人;也受到了代表不足的多数群体——无不感受着不平等和不公正在继续、急切地需要解决的女性的支持。但是,赢家是全体认为美国事实上致力于“法律面前人人平等”——铭刻最高法院三角墙之上的文字——的人。
