Tinieblas en Darfur

Darfur es la expresión abreviada del más reciente ejemplo de problema internacional recurrente y que ocupó los titulares en Rwanda hace un decenio. ¿Qué debería hacer el mundo cuando gran número de personas son víctimas de una violencia que se origina dentro de su país?

La propia Darfur es una región del Sudán occidental compuesta de musulmanes árabes y africanos. El conflicto estalló a comienzos de 2003, cuando rebeldes del Movimiento de Liberación del Sudán atacaron a tropas gubernamentales para intentar conseguir una mayor autonomía y mayores recursos para su región. Aviones del Gobierno del Sudán y tropas apoyadas por éste (conocidas como jangaweed ) contraatacaron no sólo contra los rebeldes armados, sino también contra civiles a los que consideraban partidarios de aquéllos. Se han vaciado aldeas, se ha violado a mujeres, se ha matado a hombres no árabes.

Los orígenes de la crisis actual pueden ser debatibles, pero no los costos. Más de 50.000 hombres, mujeres y niños han perdido la vida; más de un millón y medio han quedado sin hogar. Se podría decir que se trata de un genocidio, palabra utilizada por el Gobierno de los Estados Unidos, pero por pocos más, para describir lo que está ocurriendo en Darfur.
