救命的信念

日内瓦——200多名女孩在北非遭遇绑架令人联想起非洲儿童——尤其女童是何其脆弱。但认识到这并非现代非洲的真实写照是同样重要的。坚决保护本国儿童是非洲领导人共同的选择。他们能否提供富裕国家儿童所享有的保护取决于合作和信念这两个关键要素。

究其原因虽然恐怖主义是一种潜在威胁,但非洲儿童面临的最主要的危险依然来自于疾病,而日常免疫往往就是疾病的预防举措。事实上,就在世界各国正在为寻找失踪女孩争论不休时,另一项威胁正在重新浮出水面:世界卫生组织最近宣布脊髓灰质炎传播上升为国际公共卫生紧急事件,同时有若干非洲国家正面临着输出疾病的持续风险。

幸运的是,战胜正在非洲和其他国家夺去生命的小儿麻痹症和其他许多能靠疫苗预防的疾病其实并不乏直接而有效的方法。此外,非洲领导人意识到,常规免疫才是为儿童提供长期、可持续保护的最好方法。本月初,非洲国家领导人在尼日利亚首都阿布贾会面并通过了免疫非洲2020宣言,承诺投资于国内所有儿童健康和可持续的未来。
