仰光——自从1000多年前佛教传播到缅甸以来,僧侣严格遵守宗教制度就一直是人们对缅甸的印象。上座部佛教的道德规范规定僧侣不得介入政治或者担任政治职务。但是在今天的缅甸,这种以同情心和不使用暴力为根基的精神哲学却随着僧侣们挑战统治我们国家的军人集团的霸权而出人意料地呈现出了反抗和拒不服从的一面。

我们俩都是缅甸的佛教僧侣。一位是全缅甸僧伽同盟的领导人,领导了最近的抗议活动,另一位是在美国教学的学者。我们中的一个目前正在四处藏匿,因为缅甸的军政府用暴力和凶残来镇压我们信仰佛教的兄弟姐妹的和平抗议活动。

许多和尚和尼姑遭到了虐待和殴打,还有数千名被关押起来的僧侣日夜遭受着残忍的虐待。有1000多民僧侣失踪了,其中有很多可能已经死亡了。
