LONDRA – Per 20 anni, la produttività nel settore dell’edilizia globale è cresciuta a un tasso annuale di appena l’1%. Oggi, l’industria ha bisogno di entrare nel ventunesimo secolo, in modo tale che possa soddisfare la crescente domanda di nuove strutture e far fronte alla crescita di alloggi a livello mondiale e alle lacune infrastrutturali.

Il ritmo lento di cambiamento del settore edilizio non è uguale a quello di altri settori come l’agricoltura e l’industria manifatturiera, che hanno trasformato la loro performance di produttività nel tempo. Tra il 1947 e il 2010, il settore manifatturiero statunitense ha raggiunto una crescita cumulativa reale della produttività (rettificata per l’inflazione) del 760%, rispetto al 6% del settore edilizio.

Anche se l’industria edilizia ha da tempo riconosciuto la sua debolezza, deve fare qualcosa per intervenire. Ma, considerando le incalzanti difficoltà degli alloggi e delle infrastrutture in tutto il mondo, questa situazione non è più sostenibile. L'urbanizzazione può stabilizzarsi in molte economie avanzate, ma continuerà a crescere nei paesi emergenti. Le 20 città più grandi del mondo, di cui il 75% in Asia, avranno bisogno di circa 36 milioni di nuove abitazioni entro il 2025.
