费城——对父母而言,或许没有比疾病或意外丧子更为深刻的恐惧。儿童癌症最有可能将遥远的恐惧变为难以想象的现实。作为一名照顾患癌儿童及其家属超过25年的儿科肿瘤学家,我知道只有面对癌症诊断的家长才能真正理解这种深不见底的恐惧,因为它触动了我们身为家长的价值核心。

我也知道我们治疗的儿童更多,疗效更好——而且未来还可能进一步提升。

对20世纪60年代出生的孩子而言,被诊断出患有最常见的儿童癌症急性淋巴细胞白血病(ALL)         其存活率不到10%,也就是说患儿几乎必死无疑。而今天诊断出相同疾病的儿童治愈率却超过80%。回顾白血病患儿从20世纪70年代到90年代的五年存活率可以看到治愈率几乎呈直线上升。
