БЕРЛИН – Фабричное производство продукции животноводства является одной важнейших движущих сил сельскохозяйственной индустриализации. Ее безжалостное расширение способствует изменению климата, вырубке лесов, утрате биоразнообразия и нарушению прав человека – и все это ради того, чтобы удовлетворить нездоровый аппетит западных обществ к дешевому мясу.

Европа и Соединенные Штаты являются крупнейшими потребителями мяса в ХХ веке, где в среднем каждый человек ежегодно съедает 60-90 килограмм мяса – что намного больше, чем требуется для удовлетворения потребности человеческого организма в мясе. Хотя западные нормы потребления в настоящее время стагнируют, а в некоторых регионах даже сокращаются, они все еще остаются намного выше, чем в большинстве других регионов мира.

Между тем, в странах с развивающейся экономикой – особенно в так называемых странах БРИКС (Бразилия, Россия, Индия, Китая и Южная Африка) – члены растущего среднего класса меняют свои диеты, делая их похожими на диеты богатых стран. В ближайшие десятилетия, по мере роста доходов, вместе с ними будет расти спрос на мясные и молочные продукты.
