BERLIM – A produção industrial de gado é um impulsionador crítico da industrialização agrícola. A sua expansão desapiedada está a contribuir para a mudança climática, para a deflorestação, para a perda de biodiversidade, e para violações dos direitos humanos – tudo para satisfazer o doentio apetite das sociedades Ocidentais por carne barata.

A Europa e os Estados Unidos foram os maiores consumidores de carne no século XX, com a pessoa média a comer anualmente 60-90 quilogramas (132-198 libras) – muito mais do que o necessário para satisfazer as necessidades alimentares humanas. Embora as taxas de consumo no Ocidente comecem agora a estagnar, e mesmo a baixar em algumas regiões, continuam ainda mais altas que na maior parte das outras regiões do mundo.

Entretanto, em economias emergentes – especialmente nos chamados BRICS (Brasil, Rússia, Índia, China e África do Sul) – membros da florescente classe média estão a alterar as suas dietas para se assemelharem às dos seus congéneres nos países ricos. Nas próximas décadas, à medida que os rendimentos continuarem a subir, assim acontecerá à procura de carne e lacticínios.
