La pesadilla industrial de China

Los medios occidentales tienen el hábito de alimentar histerias. Irónicamente, cuando se trata de China, la última histeria tiene relación con los alimentos mismos. La ejecución esta semana del ex jefe de la Administración de Medicamentos y Alimentos China (SFDA), Zhen Xiaoyu, que aceptó casi 1 millón de dólares en sobornos, muestra que la paranoia ha arraigado en China también.

Primero hubo una serie de artículos acerca de comida para mascota que contenía melamina (un derivado del carbón), medicamento para la tos y pasta de dientes adulterados con dietileno-glicol (una sustancia química industrial de sabor suave utilizada en líquido de frenos y anticongelante), trenes de juguete decorados con pintura con base de plomo, antibióticos infectados con bacterias, baterías de teléfonos móviles que explotaban y neumáticos de automóviles con defectos.

Ahora la atención se ha vuelto hacia la comida. La prensa mundial está llena de historias acerca de miel que contiene endulzantes industriales, alimentos en latas contaminadas con bacterias y una cantidad excesiva de aditivos, licor de arroz adulterado con alcohol industrial, y peces, anguilas y camarones cultivados en piscifactorías a los que se les dio grandes dosis de antibióticos y luego se los lavó con formaldehído para bajar los niveles de bacterias.
