伦敦—我曾经与一位中国学者对话。他的双亲在20世纪30年代逃离中国,原因是他们惊骇于共产主义革命之前中国无处不在的贪婪和腐败。1949年后他们放弃加利福尼亚州大学里德舒适工作回到中国,为建设新中国出力。

这位学者的父亲在20世纪50年代的反右运动以及六七十年代的文化大革命中饱受折磨,被判刑入狱,死时一文不名。但他的母亲永远忠诚于中国共产党的领导。她认为丈夫的痛苦是为了更美好的事业所付出的个人代价。

但是,在这位学者母亲的晚年,她因为汹涌的腐败浪潮而抑郁不已。临死时,她大有一种夫妻俩徒劳牺牲一辈子的感觉。20世纪30年代令人厌恶的不道德又回来了。
