AMSTERDAM – Le réalisateur néerlandais Theo van Gogh, assassiné il y a un peu plus de dix ans par un extrémiste islamiste à Amsterdam, avait de nombreux points communs avec les satiristes de Charlie Hebdo. Comme les journalistes et dessinateurs français, il était un provocateur, un anarchiste intellectuel, un artiste subversif qui ne pouvait voir un tabou sans vouloir le briser.

Et parce que le plus important tabou d’après-guerre est l’antisémitisme, van Gogh insultait les Juifs avec des blagues grossières sur les chambres à gaz. Parce que nous somme tenus de « respecter » l’islam, il tournait Allah et le Prophète en ridicule, de manière similaire à celle employée par Charlie Hebdo.

Le but des briseurs de tabous est de définir où se trouvent les limites de la liberté d’expression, légalement et socialement. Après tout, malgré les déclarations plutôt hystériques qui ont suivi les horribles meurtres de la semaine dernière, la liberté d’expression n’est pas absolue. La plupart des pays européens ont des lois contre les propos haineux, y compris la France, où il est interdit de contester l’existence de l’Holocauste.
