东京—汽车——自由、地位和成功的老牌象征——正站在十字路口。一个多世纪以来,汽车让数十亿人得以旅行得更远、更快、更高效。汽车帮助提高了世界经济大国的实力,决定了现代社会和文化轮廓。但所有这些都是有代价的:事故、拥堵、污染、难以摆脱的石油依赖,以及其他。

因此,我们的挑战是增加汽车带来的好处,降低(并最终消除)汽车带来的伤害,从而让未来乘车旅行变得清洁、高效、安全且人人可行。因此若要让汽车产业依然是进步的工具,我们必须与其他产业的同道以及政府在三分方面展开精诚合作:安全、环境和价格。

道路安全是一个大问题。每天都有3,000多人因为与汽车有关的事故身亡。低收入国家拥有全世界的一半汽车,但却占据了致死交通事故的90%以上。印度的汽车数量比法国少四倍,道路相关死亡案例却要多20倍——也就是说,平均每辆车造成的事故数高80倍。
