Können Lebensmittelpreise stabilisiert werden?

CAMBRIDGE – Unter der Führung des französischen Ministerpräsidenten Nicolas Sarkozy haben die G-20-Staaten dem Thema der Schwankungen der Lebensmittelpreise höchste Priorität gegeben. Die Landwirtschaftsminister der Mitgliedstaaten trafen sich kürzlich in Paris, um Lösungen zu finden. Kein Wunder: Die weltweiten Lebensmittelpreise haben dieses Jahr ein Rekordhoch erreicht, ähnlich wie im Jahr 2008.

Darunter leiden die Konsumenten weltweit, insbesondere die Armen, bei denen die Kosten für Lebensmittel einen Großteil des Haushaltseinkommens verschlingen. In manchen Ländern, insbesondere in Ägypten und Tunesien, trug die Unzufriedenheit über die Lebensmittelpreise zur politischen Destabilisierung bei. Sogar Landwirtschaftsbetriebe würden sich nach den wilden Auf- und Abwärtsbewegungen der letzten fünf Jahre etwas mehr Preisstabilität wünschen.

Die Bemühungen der G-20 werden auf dem Gipfel in Cannes im November ihren Höhepunkt finden. Was allerdings konkrete Handlungsansätze angeht, ist Vorsicht geboten, da in der Vergangenheit viele Maßnahmen zur Verringerung der Agrarpreisschwankungen mehr geschadet als genützt haben.
