Die Vereinigten Staaten erhielten ihren ersten Schock – gefolgt von Klagen des amerikanischen Kongresses –, als das chinesische Computerunternehmen Lenovo Group die PC-Sparte von IBM erwarb. Dabei spielte keine Rolle, dass China bis zum Jahr 2000 weniger als 400 Millionen Dollar in den USA angelegt hatte, während Großbritannien mehr als 230 Milliarden Dollar und Japan 159 Milliarden Dollar investiert hatten. IBM ist eine der symbolbehaftetsten amerikanischen Marken, und viele US-Politiker reagierten bestürzt auf Chinas wirtschaftlichen Einbruch in ihr Land.

Diese fast reflexhafte Reaktion erinnert an die 1980er Jahre, als Amerika erwachte und feststellte, dass japanische Unternehmen wie Sony und Mitsubishi Estates Columbia Pictures bzw. das Rockefeller Center aufkauften und selbst der gerühmte Golfplatz von Pebble Beach von japanischen Investoren übernommen wurde. „Die Leute hatten Angst, dass die ‚Rockettes’ in Zukunft würden Kimonos tragen müssen,“ so Susan Tolchin von der George Mason University, Verfasserin von „Buying Into America“.

Als Nächstes gab der große chinesische Hersteller von Haushaltsgeräten aus Qingdao, Hai’er, seine Absicht bekannt, den Haushaltsgerätehersteller Maytag – eine weitere symbolträchtige amerikanische Marke – übernehmen zu wollen.
