当中国电脑公司联想集团收购IBM公司的个人电脑业务时,美国朝野上下在国会的抱怨声中受到了第一次震动。且不论2000 年截止,中国在美国的投资还不足4亿美元,而英国在美的投资已超过2300亿美元,日本则有 1590亿美元。IBM是美国最具偶像意义的公司之一,许多美国政界人士都对中国的经济入侵大吃一惊。

这样的情形让人不由自主地回想起1980年代,从睡梦中惊醒的美国人发现日本公司正大肆收购美国资产,索尼买下了哥伦比亚电影公司,三菱地产收购了洛克菲勒中心,就连加州海岸的圆石滩高尔夫球场也被日本投资者收入曩中。乔治· · 梅森大学的Susan Tolchin,《买进美国》一书的作者就曾写道:“人们担心洛克茨(Rockettes)舞者们也不得不穿和服了。”

接着,又有消息公布说以青岛为基地的中国家电制造商海尔有意收购另一个具有偶像意义的美国本土品牌,家电制造公司美泰克(Maytag)。
