跨越十九和二十世纪的社会主义改革围绕着集中政府对资本的所有权。于是,在二十世纪的最后几十年中,目的截然相反的反改革浪潮席卷全球,推崇将资本尽可能地分散以使每个人都能成为所有者。

当前的反改革正被带入一个逻辑极端:若每人都能成为所有者,那么每人都能成为资本家,下至理发师、侍应者甚至拾荒者。

但是,就如共产主义梦想将每个人都变成充满勇气的社会主义工人一样,将每个人都变成资本家同样也是不可能的。人们对神秘的金融原理的兴趣一直在减少,尤其是那些喜欢凝神看数表、研究数学公式的人。这些人有时候使他们自己变得富有,如果每个人都能做到这样,那看起来还真不错。但是性别不同、天赋、缺点以及心理偏爱的差异,使之成为不可能。
