大选在前,现实在后

发自伦敦——我可不是在这里自吹自擂,不过上一次保守党赢得英国大选还是1992年,当时的首相是约翰·梅杰,而时任党主席而又成功操办了那场大选的,正是鄙人。

我们赢得了大选,但我本人却在竞选议会席位时落败,并被派到香港担任这个殖民地的末代总督。因此当保守党彻底丧失了执政意志,随之在1990年代中期因英国在欧洲所扮演的角色这一问题而分裂的时候,我是不在场的。一切正如温斯顿·丘吉尔所言:“政治自杀是一个足以令人后悔一辈子的问题。”

虽然梅杰成功地带领英国经济实现了后衰退时代的复苏,但他却在1997年输给了东尼·布莱尔,断送了保守党18年执政并迎来了工党的13年统治,而这13年的执政似乎也将在5月6日英国人投下一票后宣告落幕。
