新德里—乌克兰局势的恶化和俄美之间的日益紧张大有葬送美国总统奥巴马将“重心”转向全世界最具活力的大陆——亚洲的计划之势。奥巴马即将对日本、韩国、马来西亚和菲律宾进行访问,此次访问基本无助于挽救亚洲重心或稳固他的地区外交政策。

事实上,俄罗斯入侵乌克兰只是亚洲重心——已经被重新包装为“再平衡”——失势的最新原因。一系列其他因素——包括美国外交政策焦点再次聚集于穆斯林世界、奥巴马不愿挑战日益强硬的中国、美国防务开支下降以及美国在世界舞台领导力下降等——早已不利于亚洲重心论。

现实是,亚洲国家对中国日益强硬的外交政策越来越担心,这给了美国一个重要的机会——它可以通过强化旧盟友关系和建设新伙伴关系重新赢得在该地区的核心地位。但美国却白白浪费了这一机会,让中国继续扩大着自己的领土主张。
