几乎所有从宽容明显跌落到声名狼藉的原因都与伊斯兰教有关。甚至是简单的要求,就像女学生在班上戴头巾,都突然被装载了重大的政治性,并且被当成是必须由最高层的政府来解决的问题。人们以及他们选举出的领导人常常认为这些貌似清白的提议实际上是某个不祥的“暗藏的动机”的一部分。

那个动机就是“伊斯兰教”,许多人想象它包含了我们每天从媒体上读到的所有恐怖的事情:在尼日利亚北部根据伊斯兰教教法用石头砸死通奸的女人,在沙特阿拉伯砍下小偷的手,在巴基斯坦(或者甚至英国北方的城市,像布拉德福德和曼彻斯特)杀死拒绝接受包办婚姻的女人,为自杀性人体炸弹辩护的意愿。
