Una nueva esperanza para Haití

NUEVA YORK – Durante una visita reciente que realicé a una comunidad rural de Los Palmas, Haití, tuve la oportunidad de conversar con familias afectadas directamente por la epidemia del cólera, que aqueja al país desde el terremoto de 2010. Un hombre me explicó que la enfermedad no solo había causado la muerte de su hermana, sino que su suegra también había fallecido durante su intento de llegar al hospital más cercano durante el cual caminó varias horas. Él y su esposa se hacen cargo ahora de cinco sobrinas y sobrinos que quedaron huérfanos.

Actualmente en Haití historias como esta no son raras. En efecto, miles de personas en todo el país han padecido pruebas y tragedias similares.

Sin embargo, también hay señales de esperanza. Mediante una mayor participación de la comunidad y cambios en las prácticas de higiene se ha eliminado el cólera en Los Palmas y el pueblo vecino de Jacob –una inversión espectacular de la situación de hace algunos años– y se ha reducido el riesgo de contraer otras enfermedades transmitidas por el agua. Por ejemplo, una familia que conocí me mostró orgullosamente un nuevo filtro de agua.
