发自纽黑文市——由于全球经济中的很大一部分都明显陷入了由紧缩引发的痛苦长期衰退,也是时候要承认这种困境是我们自身造成的了。我们在思考如何处理螺旋上升的公共债务方面上有着不幸的坏习惯——而正是这种习惯导致了今天的局面。

人们基于周围亲朋戚友的经验养成了这些习惯:当出现债务问题时,人们必须削减开支并在负担(债务与收入之比)减轻之前经历一段时间的紧缩。这意味着有段时间不能到餐厅吃饭,不能买新车,也没法添置新衣服。这样的反应似乎是常识——甚至是一种美德。

然而,这种有效针对单个负债家庭的方法对整个经济体却不起作用,因为削减开支只会让问题更加恶化。这是节俭悖论:强制性节约导致人们失去工作,因为别人不再买他们生产的商品,所以人们的债务负担不但没下降,反而还上升了。
