SINGAPUR/ATLANTA – A principios del siglo diecinueve, Lord Byron escribió en Don Juan que “Hasta que el dolor nos lo enseña, los hombres no sabemos realmente cuál es el valor del agua”. Cerca de 200 años después, la humanidad todavía parece no reconocerlo, lo que refleja en décadas de mal manejo y gobernanza del agua en prácticamente todos los puntos del planeta. Sin embargo, se está haciendo cada vez más difícil pasar por alto la inminente crisis hídrica, especialmente para quienes ya sienten sus efectos.

No hay duda de que en los últimos años se ha avanzado en el manejo del agua, pero los pasos han sido graduales y han ocurrido a un ritmo demasiado lento como para enfrentar el problema eficazmente.

Para que tengan éxito será necesaria una estrategia innovadora que ponga fin a ciertos supuestos y enfoques sobre los problemas hídricos.
