纽约——在美国总统选举史上历时最长的一次选举过程中,共和党和民主党都没有解决当前最为关键的一个问题:那就是美国怎样才能将国内所关注的问题与竞争越来越激烈的全球市场成功地结合在一起?

无论是在国内还是国外,美国都不可能对当前席卷全球变化的广度和深度做出错误地认识,特别是在亚洲。当美国经济正处在从制造业向服务业过渡的巨大变革的最后阶段时,中国和印度正在崛起,而遍布亚洲的穆斯林国家也在高调争夺着在处理全球事务中更大的发言权。

但是民主党总统候选人希拉里·克林顿和巴拉克·奥巴马,以及共和党候选人约翰·麦凯恩仍旧小心翼翼地对这些问题避而不谈。相反,他们在竞选中对美国外交政策的论述被简化成了对伊拉克和阿富汗战争的无尽争论,以及没完没了地探讨北美自由贸易协定(NAFTA)的是是非非。
