Les exploitations agricoles du futur de l’Asie

MANILLE – Les pénuries alimentaires sont un lointain souvenir pour un grand nombre de gens en Asie. Pourtant la région pourrait éprouver des difficultés à sustenter et à nourrir une population en plein essor, et les pénuries pourraient alors redevenir une pénible réalité de la vie.

L’Asie est déjà le plus grand marché du monde pour ce qui est de la nourriture, et d’ici 2050 sa population devrait atteindre cinq milliards — 900 millions de personnes de plus que maintenant. En raison de sa classe moyenne grandissante, la région comptera probablement pour la moitié de l’augmentation de la consommation de bœuf et de volaille dans le monde et de plus des trois quarts de la hausse de la consommation de poisson de maintenant à 2030. Et d’ici là, plus de 60 % de la demande totale de produits céréaliers dans le monde en développement proviendra de l’Asie du Sud Est. Pour satisfaire cette demande croissante, la production alimentaire devra être de 60 à 70 % supérieure au niveau de la décennie précédente.

Dans un monde idéal, les petites exploitations agricoles de l’Asie n’auraient qu’à accroître la production. Mais elles ne sont pas dotées des ressources pour y arriver. Pour produire des quantités suffisantes de nourriture, les exploitations agricoles de l’Asie devront entreprendre une transformation digne du XXIe siècle.
