¿Una primavera del fascismo?

NUEVA YORK – ¿Estamos viendo un nuevo amanecer del fascismo? Mucha gente empieza a pensar que sí. Se ha comparado a Donald Trump con un fascista. También a Vladimir Putin y a una variedad de demagogos y charlatanes de derecha. La reciente ola de bravata autoritaria ha llegado hasta las Filipinas, cuyo presidente electo, Rodrigo "el castigador" Duterte, ha prometido arrojar a los criminales sospechosos a la Bahía de Manila.

El problema con términos como "fascismo" o "nazi" es que tanta gente ignorante los ha utilizado con tanta frecuencia, en tantas situaciones, que hace mucho tiempo que han perdido todo significado real. Son pocos los que saben de primera mano qué significó realmente el fascismo. Se ha convertido en una frase genérica para referirse a aquellas personas o ideas que no nos gustan.

La retórica imprecisa no sólo ha tornado chabacano el debate político, sino también la memoria histórica. Cuando un político republicano compara los impuestos a la propiedad en Estados Unidos con el Holocausto, como lo hizo un candidato al Senado en 2014, los asesinatos masivos de judíos se trivializan al punto de perder todo sentido. Lo mismo es más o menos válido cuando se compara a Trump con Hitler o Mussolini.
