Sind Banker wirklich überbezahlt?

LONDON – Werden die Mitarbeiter im Finanzsektor zu hoch bezahlt? Nicht alle von ihnen natürlich, denn es gibt schlecht bezahlte Bankangestellte und Reinigungskräfte, die auch in diese Kategorie fallen. Aber ist es möglich, die enormen Entgelte zu rechtfertigen, die Investmentbanker, Hedgefondsmanager und Private-Equity-Partner verdienen – oder sollten wir sagen bekommen?

Die meisten Menschen würden einfach und schnell mit Nein antworten. So denken auf jeden Fall die Kongressabgeordneten in den USA und die Parlamentarier in Großbritannien. Sie versuchen, Möglichkeiten auszutüfteln, um Finanzunternehmen zu disziplinieren, allerdings bislang ohne sichtbaren Erfolg, wie die gewaltigen Beträge zeigen, die von Goldman Sachs beiseite gelegt wurden, um die Mitarbeiter nach dem jüngsten profitablen Quartal der Bank zu entlohnen.

Doch was heißt das eigentlich, dass die Belegschaften im Finanzsektor zu hoch bezahlt werden? Nach welchem Maß und im Verhältnis zu wem sind sie überbezahlt? Wie viele andere Menschen neige ich dazu, zu glauben, dass jeder, der mehr verdient als ich, dem ersten Anschein nach überbezahlt ist, aber ich weiß, dass dies nicht der rigoroseste Test ist, den man anwenden könnte.
