منح التاريخ ياسر عرفات زمناً أطول كثيراً مما حصل عليه أغلب زعماء العالم، لكي ينجز مهمته. فعند وفاته كان قد أمضى 35 عاماً زعيماً للفلسطينيين. إلا أنه على الرغم من هذا، رحل تاركاً شعبه في موقف عسير، بلا دولة، وفي وسط حرب خاسرة، وباقتصاد مفلس. وإن نجاح خلفائه في إحياء وإنجاز مهمة الشعب الفلسطيني التاريخية يتوقف على كيفية تحديدهم لغاياتهم وأهدافهم.

إذا استرجعنا تاريخ عرفات فسنجد أنه لم ينحرف قيد أنملة عن إيمانه بأن مهمة حياته كانت تتلخص في تدمير إسرائيل بأية وسيلة ممكنة وإحلال دولة فلسطينية عربية في محلها. فهو لم يجد في نفسه ميلاً إلى إنشاء دولة فلسطينية مستقلة لا تتضمن كل أراضي إسرائيل. كما أنه لم يكترث بالرفاهية المادية لشعبه أو بإقامة نظام سياسي اقتصادي قابل للتطبيق والاستمرار.

والآن في مرحلة ما بعد عرفات يتعين على الفلسطينيين أن يختاروا من بين عدة استراتيجيات. ولكن مما يدعو للأسف أن أغلب البدائل تدعو إلى الاستمرار في اللجوء إلى العنف والإرهاب.
