PARIGI – Nel suo libro La hybris del punto zero il filosofo colombiano Santiago Castro-Gomez descrive l’affermazione di Cartesio del 1637 “penso quindi sono” come il momento in cui i bianchi europei si sono messi al di sopra di Dio come unici arbitri della conoscenza e della verità. Da quel momento in poi, secondo il filosofo, hanno iniziato a considerarsi come degli osservatori con metodi scientifici, una morale e un’etica superiore a quelle delle altre culture.

I cosiddetti  “punti zero” a livello culturale sono importanti in quanto fungono da linea divisoria, ovvero indicano una chiara demarcazione tra un “prima” e un “dopo” con conseguenze fondamentali per lo sviluppo della vita pubblica e privata. E’ qundi decisamente istruttivo prendere in considerazione le implicazioni del concetto espresso da Castro-Gomez rispetto al mondo arabo. Di certo si potrebbe affermare che gran parte dei problemi della regione sono da attribuire all’assenza di un “punto zero” autoctono quale fondamenta di una cultura moderna.

Il sociologo americano David Riesman ha individuato nel suo libro La folla solitaria tre ampie categorie culturali: le culture legate alla tradizione che guardano ai rituali, alla morale e ai valori ereditati come modello, le culture rivolte all’interno che influenzano i comportamenti delle persone sulla base di  valori autoalimentati e le culture rivolte all’esterno che agiscono prevalentemente sulla base di regolamenti esterni e delle influenze dei loro pari. La teoria di Riesman ha avuto particolare risonanza nel mondo arabo moderno dove l’aumento del tasso di alfabetizzazione ed i rapidi progressi nel campo delle tecnologie dell’informazione e della comunicazione hanno smosso un vortice di narrative culturali mettendo le tre categorie del sociologo in competizione tra di loro per definire il futuro della regione.
