但产妇和婴儿死亡不仅发生在过去,更不止发生在小说当中。每年死于出生感染的有40多万新生儿和30多万妇女。这样的死亡多数发生在低收入国家,而且随着治疗感染的抗生素随耐药菌的出现效力越来越差,情况只会变得越来越严重。

根据目前的统计,每年超过200,000新生儿死于不对现有药物产生任何反应的感染。而大医院数据研究——微生物在大医院里更容易产生耐药性——估计约40%的新生儿感染对标准治疗不产生反应。
