Die USA im Fußballfieber

WASHINGTON, DC – In den Vereinigten Staaten hat sich im letzten Monat etwas verändert – oder vielleicht wurde etwas sichtbar. Viele Millionen US-Amerikaner, mehr als je zuvor, sahen die Übertragungen der Fußballweltmeisterschaft auf Englisch oder Spanisch. Natürlich behaupteten viele nach dem Ende des Turniers, dass sich die US-Amerikaner nur alle vier Jahre dafür interessieren – und das auch nur, wenn die USA mitspielen. Aber dieses Mal war etwas anders: Die Amerikaner haben sogar nach dem Ausscheiden des US-Teams weiter zugeschaut.

So schalteten an einem ganz normalen Nachmittag mitten im Sommer fast 15 Millionen US-Bürger das Halbfinalspiel Brasilien gegen Deutschland ein. Dies ist mehr als die übliche Zuschauerzahl des Monday Night Football bei ESPN, der größten regelmäßigen Fernsehsendung für Fans des American Football.

Fast alle jungen Mitarbeiter meiner Organisation New America fanden Wege, um die Vorrundenspiele der USA sehen zu können. Meine Mitbewohnerin erzählte, alle in ihrem Büro im US-Ausbildungsministerium hätten sich mit einer angeblichen Geburtstagsparty entschuldigt, um das Spiel der USA gegen Deutschland sehen zu können. An dem Dienstagnachmittag, als die USA in der Finalrunde gegen Belgien spielte, waren die Bars in Aspen, Colorado, brechend voll.
