Angela Merkels Vision

CAMBRIDGE – Nun, da Europa um die Rettung des Euro kämpft, wird der Chor der Klagen über Führungsschwächen in den wichtigsten Ökonomien der Welt immer lauter. Vielerorts hebt man dabei die deutsche Kanzlerin Angela Merkel hervor, weil es ihr nicht gelungen sein soll, eine ähnliche Vision von Europa voranzutreiben wie es ihr Vorgänger und Mentor Helmut Kohl tat. Haben die Kritiker recht?

Teilweise besteht die Tätigkeit effektiver Führungspersönlichkeiten darin, eine Vision zu kommunizieren, die der Politik einen Sinn verleiht und andere anspornt, diese Politik (und deren Proponenten) zu unterstützen. Das ist eine Möglichkeit, wie Führungspersönlichkeiten dazu beitragen, gemeinsame Ziele zu schaffen und gemeinsames Handeln anzuregen. Gemeinhin enthält eine derartige Vision ein Zukunftsszenario, das den Wandel fördern soll. Oder sie beschreibt den  Status quo – oder die Vergangenheit – als reizvoll, um Widerstand gegen den Wandel anzuspornen.

Wie auch immer: Ohne eine Vision ist es schwierig, andere überhaupt in eine Richtung zu führen. Frederick Smith, Vorstandsvorsitzender von Federal Express, sagt: „Die primäre Führungsaufgabe besteht darin, die Vision und Werte einer Organisation zu kommunizieren.“
