波茨坦——最新卫星观测证实了两台独立计算机的模拟结果,那就是南极西部冰盖已陷入势不可挡的崩溃状态。地球现已进入气候变化不可逆后果的崭新时代。现在唯一剩下的问题是我们能否阻止类似状况在其他地方出现。

最新研究结果表明世界气候系统的关键部分尽管规模巨大但却极为脆弱,可能受到人类活动难以弥补的破坏。全球气温越高,南极洲其他部分达到类似临界点的风险必然也就越大;事实上,我们现在知道南极东部跟西部冰盖面积相仿、甚至更胜一筹的威尔克斯盆地很有可能也面临着同样的威胁。

我们无法提前数十、数百甚至数千年合理预测某种人类活动的影响。核废料的影响仅是其中之一;人类燃烧化石燃料释放温室气体造成海平面上升所导致的全球变暖则是另外一种可能的影响。
