荒谬的是,在美国有一个指标一直在稳健增长——生产率——可能是这一问题最明显的迹象。当说到生产率的时候,经理们要么在员工培训、更高效的制造工艺等等上进行投资,要么采取似乎能在短期内推进生产率但是在长期内损害生产率的措施。

生产率是度量每工作小时产出的标准。所以,一个解雇其所有工人然后运输库存的公司可以看起来很多产——直到它将库存用尽。当然,没有公司能这样做,但是许多美国公司已经在大量剥离工人和中层经理——2008年1月份的数字比去年同期增加了19%。
