新德里——欧内斯特·海明威的系列小说《没有女人的男人》刻画了两性间的紧张关系。在一则特别凄美的小说中,一名年轻男子将尚未出世的婴儿视作障碍因而说服伴侣打胎,心灰意冷的女人被迫表示同意。

80年前的这则小说反应的现象在当今印度依然具有实际意义,这里的女性胎儿所面临的风险非常严峻。2011年的人口普查显示,印度的男女童比例已经从每千名男性927名女性下降到每千名男性914名女性,创下六十年来的新低。印度北部各邦的男女童比例尤其令人震惊:只有喜马偕尔邦目前的比例仍处于900以上。

尽管被视为非法,但印度各地普遍利用超声波鉴定婴儿性别,导致大量健康的女性胎儿招致人为堕胎。而且合法手术也引发了严重的担忧。一种改变新生女婴性别的生殖器成形术正在印度境内蓬勃发展,这一现象引起了很多人的担忧。
