MÜNCHEN – Große Wirtschaftskrisen bringen oft legendäre Unternehmen ins Wanken. Das Medienimperium des Rupert Murdoch ist beispielhaft für einen modernen globalen Konzern. Ein besonders dynamisches und innovatives Geschäftsmodell kam vom anderen Ende der Welt und übernahm die Kontrolle über zentrale Aspekte des öffentlichen Lebens, erst in Großbritannien und dann in den USA. Durch den Skandal, der mit dem Abhören von Telefonen in Murdochs britischer Pressezentrale begann, wird dieses Modell nun bedroht.

Der Fall Murdoch ist ein Mikrokosmos der Funktionsweise moderner Globalisierung. Murdoch wurde immer als fremder Einfluss auf das Leben in Großbritannien gesehen. Nicht nur war er Australier, er brachte auch neue Ideen.

Insbesondere der Einsatz digitaler Technologien, eingeführt nach heftigen Kämpfen mit den mächtigen Druckereigewerkschaften, führte zu bedeutenden Kostensenkungen und ermöglichte eine neue Ära von Journalismus. Darüber hinaus stand Murdoch für ein Konzept des Familienunternehmens, das in vielen Teilen der Welt üblich ist, aber in Großbritannien und den Vereinigten Staaten relativ selten vorkommt.
