莫斯科—1811年,外交家、反启蒙主义哲学家迈斯特(Joseph de Maistre)在评估俄罗斯发生西方式转型的可能性——或者说不可能性——时写下了一段著名的话:“每一个国家都有它应得的政府。”十四年后,十二月革命——诗人和军官推翻沙皇尼古拉斯一世、实现君主立宪的运动——似乎驳倒了迈斯特的结论。但革命遭到了镇压,十二月革命党人被处死或流放。一位被处决的官员说了一句名言:“你无法绞死我们所有人。”

俄罗斯的野蛮二十世纪及其集权主义和古拉格几乎证明了这位官员——以及迈斯特——的错误。没人“应得”被如此残暴统治的命运。据估计,2000万俄罗斯人丧生于斯大林的统治,其余人也在恐怖中惶惶不可终日。
