Contra la simplificación

NEW YORK – Se dice que los estadounidenses tienen un talento excepcional para la simplificación. Gradualmente, sin embargo, la búsqueda de esta simplificación se ha convertido en una tendencia mundial, que continúa conquistando nuevos territorios, igual que los blue jeans otrora lo hicieron.

La velocidad de nuestra vida cotidiana se ha visto notablemente incrementada – y no de manera positiva – por esta imparable evolución. La tiranía del pragmatismo parece marcar todos los dilemas complejos de nuestro tiempo. Se ignoran o eluden demasiadas opciones válidas a través de la rutina de hacer las cosas de manera acortada (los “short-cuts”).

En ningún otro lugar es esta tendencia más perjudicial que en el actual abordaje mercantilista del arte. Aun la tan elogiada noción de la competencia parece falsa y cínicamente manipulada por la mentalidad "corporativa" que ahora invade el mundo de la cultura – mediante la preselección financiera que determina cuáles editores, productores y otros empresarios van a recibir apoyo. Simplemente imagínese lo que podría haber ocurrido con los trabajos de, por ejemplo, Proust, Kafka, Musil, Faulkner o Borges si estos se hubiesen visto sometidos a la competencia del mercado de masas tal como se someten los zapatos o los cosméticos.
