Contre la simplification

NEW YORK – Les américains auraient, dit-on, le génie de la simplification. Peu à peu cependant, cette quête de simplification devient une tendance globale, une tendance qui continue de conquérir de nouveaux territoires, tout comme les jeans en leur temps.

Cette irrésistible évolution a entrainé une accélération de notre rythme de vie quotidienne - pas nécessairement pour le meilleur. Tous les dilemmes complexes de notre époque semblent être marqués par la tyrannie du pragmatisme. Trop de choix valables sont ignorés ou contournés dans la routine des raccourcis.

Mais c’est bien dans l’approche mercantile de l’art que cette tendance est la plus préjudiciable. Même la notion tant prisée de concurrence semble faussée et cynique tel qu’elle est manipulée par la mentalité « corporatiste » qui domine désormais le monde de la culture – par la pré-sélection financière qui détermine ce que soutiennent les éditeurs, les producteurs et autres impresarios. Imaginez simplement ce qui aurait pu arriver aux ouvres de Proust, Kafka, Musil, Faulkner, ou Borges, s’ils avaient été soumis à la concurrence du marché de masse comme de simples chaussures ou produits de maquillage.
