Вспоминая массовые убийства в Шри-Ланке

НЬЮ-ЙОРК – Одно из самых зверских преступлений за последние десятилетия практически не получило отклика во всем мире. Мы помним и осознаем постыдность действий в Камбодже, Руанде, Боснии и Дарфуре. Мы мучаемся от того, что не можем остановить зверства, ежедневно происходящие в Сирии. Но, по крайней мере до сих пор, мир не обращает практически никакого внимания на военные преступления и преступления против человечности, сравнимые по своей жестокости с выше перечисленными: массовые расстрелы в Шри-Ланке в 2009 году.

Три года назад, во время кровопролитной завершающей стадии войны между правительством Шри-Ланки и сепаратистской группировкой Тигров освобождения Тамил-Илама, около 300 000 человек оказались зажатыми между наступающей армией и оставшимися боевиками ТОТИ, пойманными в так называемую «клетку» ‑ узкую полосу земли, не больше Центрального парка в Нью-Йорке, между морем и лагуной на северо-востоке страны.

Ни одна из сторон не проявила ни сдержанности, ни сострадания, и по меньшей мере 10 000 граждан – а может и все 40 000 – погибли в кровавой бойне, последовавшей в результате беспорядочного обстрела со стороны армии, ответного огня повстанцев и отказа от поставки еды и медикаментов.
