Podemos Alimentar o Mundo?

LONDRES – Na década de 1960, a Revolução Verde – que incluiu o desenvolvimento de variedades agrícolas de alto rendimento, a expansão de infra-estruturas de irrigação, e a distribuição de fertilizantes e pesticidas modernos aos agricultores de países em desenvolvimento – reforçou a produção agrícola em todo o mundo. Mas a fome crónica continua disseminada, particularmente nos países em desenvolvimento, os mais afectados pela escassez de colheitas e pela volatilidade do preço dos alimentos.

Em 2050, espera-se que a população humana global exceda os nove mil milhões. Alcançar a segurança alimentar significa assegurar que todas as pessoas tenham acesso consistente e de baixo custo aos nutrientes certos, apesar das limitações de terra e água, das alterações climáticas, e da crescente prevalência das ricas dietas ao estilo Ocidental, que acompanham o crescimento dos rendimentos.

Ultrapassar estes desafios não será fácil. Mas, se encetarem uma acção concertada para encorajar a inovação, reforçar as ligações comerciais, e apoiar os agricultores de pequena dimensão e as mulheres, os países em desenvolvimento podem construir sectores agrícolas produtivos, estáveis, resilientes e equitativos, atingir um crescimento económico sustentável, e garantir a segurança alimentar para todos.
