In one clean sweep you have rendered other great nation not to mention a union of nations incompetent and not worthy of leadership and innovation.
There is no doubt that America is a great nation in a league of nations. It is also true that AT THE MOMENT it without a doubt occupies a leadership position and a platform for economic growth that is stimulated largely by the contributions of peoples from the same nations you consider second rate.
Don't fool yourself that America or Rome or indispensible and wonder out loud of what might happen if this economic and military empire withers.
No one in their right mind would wish anything to happen to America as it would to EU, Russia or China. If, according to you the World thrives because of America; I have news for you America thrives because of the World. Frankly, it is demeaning to even suggest the importance of any one nation over others in an increasingly global environment. It almost comes across as chicanery or bad journalism certainly awful policy imperative from an individual who has made a living in policy planning and advice. It is perhaps then not surprising that the global problems the World faces like increasing terrorism and hatred for America may be attributed to bad policy advice from people like Dick N. Haas.
Next time try your hand at writing children stories. You already have the title “My America”. If Salman Rusdie can learn to write children stories there is hope for even you!
What is the point of all this Shashi? A great infomercial of some state sanctioned event to highlight India's insecurity and dependence on whoever can lend a helping hand, so that India keeps shining to the outsiders. Like a typical South Asian, India will not let go and Indians the NRI's would not let go, unwilling to cut the umbilical cord of mutual suspicion and a heightened sense of insecurity. Yet, according to estimates 35% of the 1.2 billion remain ever ready to migrate out of Mother India at a moment’s notice. These numbers then Perhaps, indicate there is hope for the millions of South Asians who never grow out of their parents shadows and parents whose insecurity compels them to keep their brood about the nest forever. A sordid relationship defined of mutual misery. You are damn right only in India and for the Indians there is this unique term NRI. Because, most self respecting nations and peoples would not stand for it. I may be an Indian but, I am who I am and defined by my person rather than by a brand of nationality. Perhaps it’s time for the Indians to move on with life and give a new meaning to the term NRI; (not relying on India or Indians).
Frankly 2013 is going to remain a year of confusion and chaos. And sure the middle East will remain as turbulent as ever to include Israel. I am not sure of which political chaos you speak of in Asia, the run of the Mill Asian chaos is not Chaos this is how they get things done.
The biggest challenge will not be Iran or its nuclear ambitions. The biggest challenge may come from China and Russia. However, the political and social instability in the US is going to rise and frankly continue to rise for years to come. I really think we will see an acceleration in reverse migration.
Another democracy peddler. Why can't they be like us and why do they hate us?
You may also wish to remind Obama and the foreign-policy experts Nina Hachigian and David Shorr that “the responsibility doctrine”: of the great powers involves an active responsibility to uphold global norms and solve global problems while not slipping down the primrose path to bankrupty. Did, I hear recently that the "great World powers's" crdit rating was recently downgraded and folks are already talking about the "post America World"?
Look, there is a time to be the world policeman and meddle into every affair calling it agreat human tragedy and then there is time to do a bit of housekeeping. US, right about now needs a lot of housekeeping so that it would then have the potential to stand up to China and spread the wonderful democracy around the globe. Ain't that just peachy!
Well, Mr. Global strategist this is a case where cut and paste academic punditry is set to ruin the Life of thousands no millions of small shop keepers across India. If there is one thing everyone (besides you) is sure about is that large retailers like Walmart and Carrefour don't just destroy small businesses they destroy neighborhoods, communites. So, then India would be happy to allow Walmart sell cheap low grade Chinese products in Indian markets? Robbing India of the small business network as well as production base. Sure, Mr Singh is defiant because of the power of these large retailers and the political badwill they can purchase.
Before you even propose to demolish the brick and mortar consider India's depth in online access across Indian households. Its a paltry number to start any serious debate. In your haste to bring India into the 21st please make sure you don't punditrize India into a falied status. I honestly think if anything large retailers should only be allowed in if they in turn agree to use locally manufactured products. There is a lot of good sense in bolstering local industrial production.
