Nueva York – La selección de Sarah Palin como candidata a la vicepresidencia con McCain ha caído sobre los Estados Unidos como una tormenta eléctrica. Para sus legiones de admiradoras de derechas que agitan pintalabios, Palin es una “mamá común y corriente”, mujer práctica y temerosa de Dios, cuyas afición a la caza del alce y fe evangélica e incluso su caótica vida familiar constituyen pruebas, todas ellas, de que es una americana real y típica.
Para sus detractores, igualmente frenéticos, de izquierdas –y cada vez más de centro–, es un temible heraldo de unos Estados Unidos teocráticos, una ejecutora en materia de asuntos estatales de estilo mafioso, que miente sobre la conexión de los ataques terroristas del 11 de septiembre de 2001 con el Iraq, se burla de Barack Obama por su oposición a la tortura de prisioneros y desafía las citaciones. Piénsese en ella como George W. Bush II, pero con zapatos de diseño.
Los dos grupos están reaccionando ante realidades auténticas. Los que la apoyan responden a un potente conjunto de símbolos y sus detractores a un conjunto aún más potente de hechos.
Es importante entender el atractivo simbólico de Palin para cierto grupo de votantes femeninas y debemos respetar la rabia y el ansia que refleja. El subtexto de dicho atractivo es la clase social.
Las mujeres blancas de clase trabajadora en los Estados Unidos han sufrido la explotación e infravaloración de sus talentos desde el nacimiento de la nación. Mientras que las mujeres blancas acomodadas o las mujeres de cualquier origen que consiguieron obtener una instrucción de calidad –las Hillary Clinton, Madeleine Albright y Condoleezza Rice de los Estados Unidos– rompieron el techo de cristal que tenían por encima e incluso tienen el movimiento de las mujeres para encumbrarlas, las mujeres blancas de clase trabajadora han contemplado su ascenso con un resentimiento comprensible.
Sus pares más acomodadas contratan a mujeres como ellas para hacer el trabajo sucio o, si no, han tenido que aceptar el estancado salario mínimo del gueto del sector femenino o del sector de los servicios del mercado laboral estadounidense. Su techo está hecho de cemento y queda muy bajo, por lo que limita sus talentos y su movilidad. Por encima de todo, han quedado excluidas, practica y simbólicamente, del discurso político del país y los políticos suelen tratarlas con condescendencia.
También la raza es un factor. Aunque están saliendo a la luz informaciones de que Palin dijo a un grupo de afroamericanos que no tenía la obligación de contratar a personas negras, las mujeres blancas de clase trabajadora con frecuencia conciben su propia experiencia desde el punto de vista de la hostilidad racial. Notan la existencia de una clase inferior que recibe –están convencidas de ello– prestaciones sociales que a ellas se les deniegan y de una economía próspera en el mundo en desarrollo que se queda con puestos americanos bien pagados de trabajo manual.
Por eso, cuando Sarah Palin acapara la atención de los medios de comunicación, se convierte en la fantasía de revancha simbólica de muchas de esas trabajadoras de fábricas y secretarias agotadas y silenciadas. Ver a una mujer blanca de clase trabajadora elegida para prestar servicio a la distancia de un latido de corazón del Presidente de los EE.UU. ejerce una potente resonancia en ellas. Piénsese en el atractivo de películas como Thelma and Louise o Working Girl , en las que la protagonista es una secretaria explotada y con agallas que, pese a verse pisoteada por una presuntuosa jefa que ha estudiado en una de las mejores universidades del país, al final consigue su empleo soñado, el novio soñado y un despacho propio.
Prácticamente cualquier mujer que no tenga un origen social privilegiado, que tenga hijos pequeños en casa y no sea una caníbal o una adepta al satanismo había de obtener al principio clamores de aprobación por parte de las mujeres en general y, desde luego, por parte de un grupo que se ha visto silenciado y trivializado durante tanto tiempo. Cuando te has pasado toda la vida preparando café para los demás, resulta agradable imaginarte dirigiendo el mundo libre.
Ahora bien, la pérdida de puestos en los índices de aprobación de Palin muestran que, si bien esa clase de mujeres se entusiasman con la validación simbólica, no son tontas. Han empezado a advertir que Palin aparece presentada como una modelo en una exhibición de automóviles para que conozca a jefes de Estado, como si fueran vendedores de coches locales, y que se permite a los medios de comunicación tomar fotografías, pero no hacer preguntas (“¡Ésa soy yo con Henry Kissinger!”). También advierten que la economía está desmoronándose, mientras que el Iraq se está calmando sólo porque los EE.UU. están pagando a los insurgentes y a los simpatizantes de Al Qaeda el equivalente de la letra mensual de un coche comprado a plazos por persona para que no maten a sus soldados.
Además, a medida que cobra forma el personaje político de Palin, resulta cada vez más alarmante. El problema no es sólo que la campaña de McCain la haya rodeado de veteranos de la camarilla de Bush-Cheney (los acólitos y agentes de Karl Rove ahora le escriben los discursos y dirigen cada uno de sus movimientos), sino que, además, cree que Dios estableció su programa legislativo en Alaska y que, por lo que se refiere a viajes al extranjero, no ha pasado del canal de televisión Discovery.
Entretanto, el gran motivo de preocupación es que, según están confirmando los dermatólogos, el tipo de cáncer para el que McCain ha recibido tratamiento tiene en una persona de su edad una tasa de supervivencia desde el punto de vista actuarial de entre dos y cuatro años. De modo que, a medida que la preocupante perspectiva de una larga presidencia Palin empieza a instaurarse, ya no parece tan estupenda a las mujeres blancas de clase trabajadora.
Así, pues, ¿qué nos enseña esa breve burbuja Palin?
Al pasar a ser la chica del cartel para la continuación con otro nombre del gobierno de Bush, Palin está demostrando que tiene mucho en común con brillantes populistas falsas como Eva Perón o la dirigente antiinmigración danesa Pia Kjaersgaard. Lo que debemos aprender –para la próxima vez y para cualquier ocasión futura– es que se está pasando por alto a las grandes dirigentes potenciales que hay en las mujeres que preparan nuestra comida, tramitan nuestros pedidos por Internet y limpian nuestros hospitales y los grandes sueños que albergan.
Las voces de esas mujeres son las que merecen apoyo… no la de una aterradora candidata de paja para otros ocho años más (o más) de gobierno de los matones que han saqueado la hacienda de los Estados Unidos, han hundido su economía y han enviado a 4.000 jóvenes valientes a morir en una guerra basada en mentiras.

Ms Wolf has again proven that " Women are their own worst enemies ". Any one with Ms Palin status will be a credit to her gender.
As for
"not that of a scary stalking-horse for eight more years (or more) of rule by the thugs who looted America’s treasury, wrecked its economy, and sent 4,000 brave young men and women to die in a war based on lies."
Ms wolf should look for the real culprits. Here is the hints to those who are the paragons of Ms Wolf belief.
Why do we not see or hear from Senators like Chuck Shummer or Chris Dodd since the financial meltdown? The two regulars that are the media favorites for endorsing democratic tickets publicly year after year.
Ms Wolf is best know for her literary achievement in describing women sexuality especially her own unabashedly. Has Ms Wolf ran out of explicit material and now branching into another territory that is more lucrative?
If so I wish you success. Please remember describing others is not as straight forward as describing your own personal intimate experiences. Let us leave historians to be the political voyeur.

I am often amazed by how people presume things and will go on those assumptions to conclude or assume even further. Assumptions/presumptions are double edge swords. It hurts both the assumer and the assumed party. If a presumption is inaccurate or loosely worded, then the assumer is at best guilty of hearsay at worst bearing false witness i.e. deceiving, lying. Often the assumed will then have to live under the assumer unproven assumption until those assumptions are proven wrong.
This go against the basic tenant of fairness. The well known adage of " not guilty until proven ".
In the court of criminal justice one is not guilty until proven otherwise. Presumption of guilt may be the initial cause of the persecution/ detention. Ultimately the accused has his or her day in court where beyond a reason of doubt has to be established before condemned.
Often writer will write or express their opinions based on assumptions that are consistent with their bias view. The assumption upon which these author further assumed on are themselves inaccurate or quote out of context.
Therefore it is very important that when an article is to be published there should be a source that commend critically on the accuracy of these writers. Especially the ones that claim to be an expert in the field that he/she is commenting on. These so called expert usually are academicians, politicians, preachers and media out lets.
Average citizen in USA follow sound bite. Often these are 3rd to 4th generation assumptions that are hard to verified let alone looked up. The catchier the sound bite the more appeal it will have. Give one something to remember without questioning. This is also the essence of propaganda. An element of the brain washing concept.
Lack of having a body that will comment critically on myriad of articles that are published, what can readers do to get to the real truth?
As always keeping some simple rules in mind as one read will quickly make one realize whether the an article that is truthful. There are only two rules.
1) Trust but verify: If the author is trustworthy he or she will produce verifiable source from which the assumptions are taken.
2) Bias: Does the Author admit to his/her bias and painstakingly try to prove the point being made are not self serving.
If the above two rules are applied to any articles one will quickly realize the true validity and value of each and every articles
In order to effectively apply the rules one must be able to see all the assumptions that are made. Usually the main one can be found within the main heading of that particular article.
As for the bias nature of the author, look for the past articles and endorsement. This can be usually done through "googling".
Take the example of this article written by an author whose credentials are presumed impeccable.
The article has the following headings:
The Palin Charade
These are the Assumptions made. Please correct me if I am too presumptuous on these assumptions
1) Ms Palin represent "the symbolic revenge fantasy of many of those silenced, exhausted factory workers and secretaries".
2)These assumed supporters currently are having second thought
3) US Economy is Imploding
4) US is buying off Iraqi insurgent and Al-Qaeda sympathizer
5) It is something bad for Ms Palin to believe that GOD set her legislative agenda in Alaska and learning about places from Discovery Channel is wanting.
6) Ms Palin represent continuation of " Bush " policy. She reminds Ms Wolf of Eva Peron and Denmark leader Pia kjaersgaard.
7) McCain can croak during his tenure. If he died right after inauguration then
8) Disturbing prospect of Ms Palin taking over for 4 years. Or even 8 years !
9) Thugs who looted American treasury are Ms Palin's patrons
10) The same people wreck US economy
11)The same people sent 4000 brave young men and women to die in a war
12)The war is based on lies.
Applying the second rule to evaluate an article for what it's worth.
1)No where in this articles has the author Ms Wolf reveal that she is strongly bias against anything republicans.
2)No painstaking effort to make it sound that her view is reasonable.
Let us take two most important assumptions Ms Wolf is basing her message on. The rest I believe are just icing or detractions.
This grand assumptions that Ms Palin is somewhat not qualified to be a potential President of USA.
No real proof given except innuendoes of racism, "did not travel to a foreign country", looking like a model in lime light, Bush's stooge etc.
The second assumption is McCain can croak due to his history of Melanoma.
Again no real proof.
One can easily google those two questions as well as MS Wolf and find out that
1) Ms Wolf is rabidly anti-Bush, anything Republicans, if not America. She has condemned USA everywhere she went. There are video, audio and published proves out there. Even in this forum " Dear world-- ".
2) Ms Palin is associated with notably this credential there are others.

Answer: Governor Sarah Palin, Alaska
According to the Washington Post, she first met with McCain in February, but nobody ever found out. This is a woman used to keeping secrets. She can be entrusted with our national security, because she already is."
3) As for McCain potential for croaking by any means I will let you find out yourself.
I hope you folks from now on learn to read any articles and value them for what they are worth applying these two simple rules
